Treatment Centers for Teens: Why We’re Different
Diamond Ranch Academy is a boarding school for troubled teens, which means our approach is different from many youth treatment centers. We provide treatment for behavioral, emotional, and mental health challenges, but we do it within a structured boarding school environment.
A Day in the Life
At Diamond Ranch Academy, students wake up in their dorms, head to the dining hall for a balanced breakfast, and start their classes by 7:35 a.m. All Diamond Ranch Academy classes are accredited by the Northwest Accreditation Commission, AdvancED, and the Utah State Office of Education. These accreditations are a testament to not only their quality but also their ability to transfer to any other high school (and many colleges) around the country.
After morning sessions, students go to a group therapy session to discuss the issues on their minds. They learn to improve communications skills, cope with negative peer pressure, and set positive goals, skills that will help them transition into adulthood.
Following afternoon classes, students might attend an individual therapy session, or they might head out to an athletic, artistic, or equestrian activity. In the evenings, students hear from keynote speakers, support Diamond Ranch athletes at games, or enjoy performances by our theater group.
Structure and Support
Many youth treatment centers deliver counseling and treatment within a hospital setting. At Diamond Ranch, we help teens feel safe by keeping things familiar. Although your teen is away from home, our teen treatment center ensures they still have a familiar routine, anchored by academics and extracurriculars.
At Diamond Ranch, we expect students to earn privileges by pitching in to do chores and complete tasks around the ranch. Our students learn that good things come to those who work hard and prove themselves trustworthy. We also give them plenty of opportunities to laugh, socialize, and have fun. We build work ethic, but we also build relationships.
Keys to Effective Treatment
Diamond Ranch Academy’s team of teachers, therapists, and youth supervisors treat each student as an individual. Unlike many teenage treatment centers, we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment. Instead, we build our custom therapeutic plans around a few core principles:
- 24/7 support. Students at Diamond Ranch meet with their therapists for one-on-one counseling at least once per week. They also have day and night access to an on-call therapist if they’re feeling unsafe or experiencing a crisis. Additionally, they receive therapy in groups, which helps them develop supportive relationships with their peers and see the power of positive progress.
- Positive effort. Many teens make mistakes because they’re not engaged in positive activities. At Diamond Ranch, we give students the chance to shine. Between our athletics programs, fine arts, performing arts, and student clubs, students can find positive ways to excel at Diamond Ranch.
- Accountability. At Diamond Ranch, we help students build self-esteem, an act that requires learning to take responsibility for their actions. Students earn privileges by demonstrating positive behavior, reliability, and trustworthiness, and they’re expected to contribute fully, whether they’re in class, completing chores, or practicing sports.
- Professionalism. Many facilities for troubled youth are staffed by people who lack qualifications and training to deal with troubled teens. Diamond Ranch is different — we maintain 24/7 access to licensed therapists, and our youth supervisors are trained in Positive Control Systems. Students are always supervised by caring, professional adults who are dedicated to their success.
Healing for Struggling Families
A teen struggling with depression, anger, and violent or criminal behavior puts enormous strain on a family. Parents love their kids and want to pass on their values, but they don’t have the experience or training to deal with a troubled teen.
Sending your child away to a teen treatment center is a difficult decision, but it can give both your teen and the rest of your family the time and space to heal. In some cases, keeping a troubled teen at home puts family members at risk for physical or emotional abuse. If you’re in a crisis situation, Diamond Ranch Academy can help.
